Ondangwa commits N$240m to a top-of-the-range sports facility

Having spent over N$25 million since 2017, the Ondangwa Town Council is committed to the realisation of a state-of-the-art sports facility at the town. The Ondangwa Town Council for the 2024–2025 financial year has budgeted over N$16 million for the facility, which will be known as the Northern Namibia High Performance Sports Centre (NNHPSC).Overall, the town council estimates the project would cost a total of N$240 by 2030.The sports field currently under construction will be multi-purpose, accommodating various sports such as pole vault, discus, high jump, javelin, shot put, steeplechase, long jump, triple jump, soccer and hockey.The stadium will also play host to other sports codes, such as basketball, netball, volleyball, tennis and boxing.Furthermore, the envisioned 20 000-seat stadium will host international and national visitors.It will feature an international standard synthetic turf, an athletic track, media rooms, anti-doping and medical rooms, police posts, leasable offices, ablution facilities, VIP boxes, luxury catering, a director&#039;s box, a president&#039;s enclosure, ticket offices and commentary suites.Hub of activity The sports facility is situated opposite the Andimba Toivo yaToivo airport in Ondangwa, where a groundbreaking ceremony took place in Ondangwa last Friday.According to sports minister Agnes Tjongarero, who officiated the event, the sports stadium will serve as a beacon of hope, a hub of activity and a cornerstone for the development of sports in Oshana Region.“To the community of Ondangwa, this stadium will be more than just a venue for sports events. It will be a gathering place, a space where families can come together, where friendships can be forged and where a sense of unity and pride can flourish,” the minister said. “The Ondangwa sports stadium will host a variety of events, from local matches to regional competitions, bringing excitement and economic activity to our town. It will stimulate local businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the overall prosperity of our community.”A committed town council Applauding the Ondangwa Town Council for their commitment, Tjongagrero said a project of this magnitude shows how committed the local authority is in terms of assisting government with developing sports in the country.“To the leadership of the Ondangwa Town Council, I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication to this project," she said. “Your vision and leadership have been instrumental in bringing us to this point. The success of this project is a reflection of your commitment to the development and well-being of our town and its residents. This stadium stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal.”To date, the council has spent N$1 065 969 on the feasibility studies, N$9 463 551 on bulk earthworks and soft costs, and N$10 036 315 on the construction of the boundary wall, initial bulk services, the eastern ticket booth, sub-soil drainage, natural turf and irrigation installation.Provide supportAlthough the council has decided to take on the mammoth project, it is looking for potential sponsors who can assist in funding the project.“To ensure the successful completion of the project, the Ondangwa Town Council invites the Namibian government, public sector entities, private sector partners, and non-governmental organisations to provide additional financial support for the following needs as outlined in the projected full master plan,” the council stated.kenya@namibiansun.com
