Team Namibia building momentum at Commonwealth Games

Team Namibia continues to produce encouraging performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with athletes impressing across gymnastics, swimming, bowls and boxing, while the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) also celebrated a proud moment off the field.NNOC president Dr Ndeulipula Hamutumwa had the honour of presenting medals during one of the Games' medal ceremonies, representing Namibia on the international stage.Namibia's artistic gymnastics team of Tyesha Vicente Humphries, Anne-Leen Thorburn, Jonie Thorburn and Sureshni Andrew finished 10th overall with a team score of 107.550. Humphries led the team by placing 33rd overall, while Anne-Leen Thorburn finished 36th, Sureshni Andrew 37th and Jonie Thorburn 38th after all four gymnasts delivered solid routines.The swimmers continued to rewrite the record books. Jessica Humphrey set new Namibian senior and 17–18 age-group records in both the 50m butterfly (27.97) and 100m backstroke (1:01.83), with the latter earning her a place in the semi-finals. Oliver Durand also broke the national senior and 17–18 record in the men's 100m butterfly with a time of 53.98 seconds to reach the semi-finals.Luke Beukes advanced to the semi-finals of the men's 50m freestyle, while José Canjulo also produced determined performances. Humphrey, Durand and Beukes all finished seventh in their respective semi-finals.Namibia's bowlers have enjoyed an impressive campaign. After opening with a defeat to England, the women's pairs combination of Amanda Steenkamp and Diana Viljoen bounced back with successive victories over Malta, South Africa and India, winning each encounter in a tie-break to remain firmly in contention. They are next scheduled to face Tonga.In the men's singles, Waylon Wentzel opened with a victory over Botswana before defeats to Australia and Guernsey. He returned to winning ways against Taylor Greechan of Jersey and next faces Royden Aperau of the Cook Islands.Namibia's boxers have also made a promising start. Phillip Hoaseb marked his Commonwealth Games debut with a dominant 5–0 unanimous decision victory over Eswatini to advance, while Tryagain Morning Ndevelo progressed to the Round of 16 after receiving a walkover in his opening bout. Ndevelo will face Md Ruhin Reza of Bangladesh, while Gebhard Tonateni Ipinge meets Paul Trainor of Australia in the men's 80kg Round of 16.With more bowls and boxing action still to come, Team Namibia continues to build momentum and proudly fly the national flag in Glasgow.
