PDM: Protect menstrual hygiene for rural girls
News in short
The official opposition, the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), has called on government to take action on a critical issue concerning menstrual hygiene for girls in rural areas. The party wants government to ensure that all girls have access to proper menstrual hygiene products, safeguarding their health, education and dignity. In a statement, party lawmaker Yvette Araes said: "The lack of adequate menstrual hygiene solutions continues to be a pressing concern for numerous girls in rural Namibia. Many girls are forced to resort to using unsanitary material during menstruation, compromising their health and hindering their ability to fully engage in daily activities, including but not limited to going to school."
While the removal of taxes on menstrual hygiene products is a commendable step, it falls short of fully addressing the challenge, she added. "The financial burden associated with purchasing these essential items remains a barrier for a lot of families in rural areas, perpetuating inequality and limiting opportunities for young girls."
