#JustIn: Swapo to hold extraordinary meeting to discuss same-sex marriage ruling
Swapo has just released a statement following discussions about a recent Supreme Court ruling, which orders the home affairs ministry to issue relevant residence rights to foreign same-sex spouses married to Namibians.
"After an extensive discussion and meeting, the politburo, therefore, resolved that an extraordinary meeting of the central committee of the party will be convened to discuss and take necessary decisions over the various concerns raised by its members, structures, supporters, and the general public, its input, and its effect on society as a whole, as well as to consider the array of available and legally viable statutory remedial action that can be conceivably be taken," the statement released by Swapo spokesperson Hilma Nicanor notes.
According to Nicanor, the party hopes to reassure the public and Swapo party members that it is taking the "anxiety and unhappiness" of the public seriously.
"The Swapo party will do everything it is able to do in accordance with the constitutional and legal requirements to find a long-lasting and acceptable solution," the statement added. Swapo also urged the public to remain calm during this process.
