#JustIn SPYL condemns Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriages

Ogone Tlhage
The Swapo Party Youth League has condemned a ruling by the Supreme Court that Namibia recognises same-sex marriages registered in other countries, saying the ruling was not consistent with Namibia's laws.

"With full respect and recognition of our independent courts and the justice system on adjudicating matters before them independently, we are also cognizant of the fact that the courts are only empowered to apply and interpret our accepted laws, upon which the relations between the people and the Republic of Namibia are governed. Having taken into account facts before us, it is clear and with no doubt that our laws do not allow for the recognition of same sex marriages," secretary Ephraim Nekongo said.

Nekongo called on the party to implement laws against homosexuality.

"We call on SWAPO as a governing party, to urgently direct government through its representation in Parliament, to craft legislation that clearly speaks on our collective position in rejection of homosexuality and all that it entails, in line with the SWAPO party constitution, political programme and the SWAPO party Elections Manifesto, our promise to the people of the Republic of Namibia," he said.

Dear comrade, Nekongo, we have a lot of comrades who are gays in the Parliament. Therefore it's likely to receive enough support to go through.
