Erongo is set for next week’s regional and local authority elections, with training, staffing and most logistics completed.

Regional electoral officer Aune Ndakeva confirmed that polling officials, police officers and election agents finished their training this week, and voter education has been running across the region since August.

“We have just completed the training of our polling officials,” she said yesterday, adding that teams are now being finalised for deployment.

Most non-sensitive materials have arrived, but the region still faces shortages.

“We are still having a shortage of vehicles and generators,” she admitted, appealing to the public to make these available. Ballot papers are expected within days.

Accurate planning

Erongo will operate 279 polling stations, including 50 mobile units.

Ndakeva said the increase follows post-election feedback from communities last year and aims to bring voting closer to residents.

She said measures are also in place to avoid disruptions seen elsewhere in past elections. Because voters must cast their ballots in the constituency or local authority where they registered, planning and ballot allocations are more accurate.

“We have added more ballots on top of the numbers we have to ensure that we do not run out,” she said.

Voters are reminded to bring their voter cards, arrive sober and avoid party colours at polling stations. Presiding officers will ensure no political flags or branded items are displayed near voting points.

Ndakeva described the voting process as quick and simple, from verification and ink-marking to receiving the correct ballot papers and casting them into the respective boxes.

Exercise your democratic right

She urged first-time voters to participate, saying these elections directly affect services such as water, sanitation, housing and road maintenance.

“These elections impact your day-to-day life,” she said.

Counting will begin immediately after polling stations close at 21:00.

Results will be forwarded to returning officers and announced once compiled. Ndakeva said most results should be available by the next day or soon after, depending on queue lengths and counting times.

She encouraged all eligible voters to participate.

“Your voice counts. By casting your vote, you will be making that difference,” she said.
