ECN deregisters late Katjiuoungua’s party
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has deregistered three political parties.
The parties – the Democratic Coalition of Namibia (DCN), which was the political home of late politician Moses Katjiuongua; the Federal Convention of Namibia (FCN), which housed late Baster kaptein Hans Diergaardt, and the Namibia Democratic Movement for Change (NDMC) - were deregistered in line with Sections 152 and 153 of the Electoral Act, the body said in a notice.
The sections stipulate that any registered political party or registered organisation that no longer functions, no longer intends to be registered as a political party or an organisation, or to take part in elections will be deregistered by the ECN.
The Act further states that the chief electoral officer must direct a letter to the political party or organisation to return its registration certificate, and remove or delete its name and other particulars from the register.
Failed to get seats
The DCN was launched in 1994 as a successor to the National Patriotic Front, and contested in the general election in that year, where it won a single seat - Katjiuongua was its sole representative in the National Assembly.
The party failed to get a seat in the 1999 general elections and did not contest in 2004.
The FCN was led by Diergaardt until his death in 1998, and thereafter by Kephas Conradie. It contested in general elections from 1989 and 1999, and was only able to get one seat in the then Namibian Constituent Assembly.
The NMDC was led by Frans !Goagoseb, while current National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) secretary-general Jossie Kauandenge served the party in the same capacity.
NMDC contested in the 2009 general elections, and did not win a parliamentary seat. Kauandenge left the party in 2010 after being suspended, while !Goagoseb dissolved it in 2012. He went on to join Swapo.
The ECN also announced the deregistration of the Otavi Residents Association, the local community associations of Windhoek and Mariental, the Omaruru Residents Association, the Concerned Peoples’ Organisation Keetmanshoop and the Ada /Gui Senior Citizens and Destitute Children’s Association.
