Police to investigate drunk-on-duty officer

Namibian Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, has confirmed an incident involving a Kavango East police officer who was found drunk on duty. Photos of the officer have been widely circulated on social media.

She assured the public that unbecoming behaviour or actions by members of the police is unacceptable and cannot be condoned, and that disciplinary procedures have been instituted.

"The matter is receiving the necessary attention. The confirmation is that the incident happened in

Kavango East Region and the officer in the picture is confirmed to be one of us, serving at the crime prevention unit and not as a traffic officer, as alleged. The procedures and/or processes to deal with this type of misconduct or incident have commenced."

Shikwambi added that the information about the incident should have first been forwarded to the regional/station commander or the police's public relations division.

"It could have been an impersonating case. But, nevertheless, we appreciate the member of the public who brought this to light, reporting these types of behaviours so that the suspects are dealt with," she said.
