Abandoned baby ‘doing well’
Passer-by discovers newborn
A one-day-old baby was found abandoned at an old clinic building on Sunday morning.
Police in the Ohangwena Region said a newborn baby boy, who was abandoned close to a church, is doing well and is under the care of nurses at Engela Hospital.
Spokesperson Sergeant Andrew Nghiyolwa said the baby was found at an old clinic building near Onamahoka Elcin church on Sunday.
The one-day-old baby was discovered that morning by a passer-by who was on her way to church and heard the newborn crying.
He added that an inquest has been opened into the matter.
“It is alleged that a community member was on her way to church and passed by the old clinic building to clean her feet,” Nghiyolwa said.
The woman then heard crying coming from a corner of the clinic building’s veranda, and that’s when she discovered the newborn, wrapped in a black jacket.
She informed the police, who are now requesting the public’s assistance to trace the baby's mother, father or family.
Nghiyolwa said there were no footprints at the scene because it rained in the area the night before and any leads might have washed away.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
