Police chief slams undisciplined officers
Namibian police inspector general Joseph Shikongo has reprimanded officers who arrived at a national crime prevention operation briefing last week without proper uniforms and equipment, warning that lapses in discipline send the wrong signal to criminals.
The month-long nationwide operation, covering all 14 regions, aims to curb violent crime, theft and drug-related offences, while improving police visibility and public trust.
Addressing officers in Windhoek on Friday, Shikongo said lack of discipline would no longer be tolerated.
“I will have mercy on you today, but it must be the last time,” he said. “When you are putting on your uniform, take your equipment. Poorly equipped officers allow criminals to blend in and escape detection.”
The police chief emphasised that officers’ professionalism directly impacts public safety and the credibility of law enforcement.
"A disciplined and properly equipped officer is a visible deterrent,” he said.
Public cooperation needed
Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said the national operation would take a broad approach, combining law enforcement with community engagement.
“The operation will focus on foot and vehicle patrols, traffic law enforcement, police visibility and enforcement of the Liquor Act,” she said.
“We are targeting all forms of crime to ensure law and order, protect life and property and educate the community.”
Shikwambi urged the public to cooperate with the police.
“We encourage all licence holders to adhere strictly to operating hours. Moreover, anyone who knows or sees anything suspicious should not hesitate to report it immediately," adding that community intelligence is critical to the success of the operation.
Shikongo’s warning to officers comes amid growing public scrutiny of police conduct. During the same briefing, he addressed a video circulating on social media that bore a police logo and promoted division.
Shikwambi said an investigation is underway to trace the video’s creator. “If such a video lands on your platform, delete it immediately. It incites exclusion and hatred, and we discourage third-party circulation,” she warned.
