Foundation gives Gobabis N$500k boost

The Swakop Uranium Foundation has invested approximately N$500 000 in upgrading the Epako Old Age Home and the Light for the Children Kindergarten in Gobabis, extending its community development initiatives beyond the Erongo Region.

On Monday, the foundation said the projects reflect its focus on improving the quality of life of vulnerable members of society by supporting facilities that care for the elderly and provide early childhood education.

At the Epako Old Age Home, the foundation funded a range of improvements, including a new television, kitchen equipment, pharmacy shelving, a washing machine, lounge furniture, the repainting of the interior and exterior of the facility, and comprehensive fumigation to eliminate pest infestations.

The upgrades have created a safer, healthier and more comfortable environment for residents while restoring dignity to the facility, the foundation said.

The Light for the Children Kindergarten also benefited from the initiative through the repainting of the school, as well as repairs to its windows and doors. The improvements are expected to provide a more conducive learning environment.

Swakop Uranium Foundation chairperson Percy McCallum said the organisation remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of mining extend beyond its operations and translate into meaningful opportunities for communities.

He said responsible mining should be measured not only by its economic contribution but also by the lasting social impact it leaves in people's lives.
