Embracing the Journey: A Message to Namibia’s Youth

Mentors played a critical role
Prof. Dr. Mesias Alfeus
As an academic and researcher in mathematical finance, I often reflect on the path that brought me here.

Growing up in a modest village in Namibia and later studying at the University of Wollongong in Australia and Stellenbosch University in South Africa taught me that progress is rarely accidental.

It is shaped by perseverance, discipline, and deliberate choices. I share these reflections in the hope that they encourage Namibia’s youth as you navigate your own journeys.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is the value of discovering what genuinely excites you. My passion was mathematics.

The challenge of using mathematical tools to understand financial markets and model complex systems drove my academic path.

That passion guided me from tutoring Namibian high-school learners struggling with mathematics to conducting research on the South African fine wine index and contributing as a technical expert to the Market Practitioners Group of the South African Reserve Bank during the JIBAR transition, with a focus on derivatives. Passion provides direction when motivation fades.

Embrace Education and Lifelong Learning

Education is not a phase; it is a lifelong commitment. The years spent completing my PhD demanded long hours, intellectual endurance, and constant curiosity.

Those years built the foundation of my career in quantitative finance. Staying relevant requires continuous learning, particularly in fast-evolving fields such as interest-rate reform and market modelling. Every opportunity to learn, refine skills, or deepen understanding is an investment that compounds over time.

Clear goals give purpose to effort. Early in my career, I defined objectives within mathematics and academia and mapped the steps needed to achieve them.

That structure helped me navigate challenges and recognise opportunities, including leading the Quantitative Finance Research Programme at the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences in South Africa and serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Futures Markets and the International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance. A plan does not eliminate obstacles, but it helps you face them with intention.

Be Adaptable and Resilient

Every journey includes setbacks. Resilience determines whether they defeat you or shape you. When I could not afford to register for my first year at the Polytechnic of Namibia, now NUST, I sought financial assistance wherever I could, including approaching strangers in shopping malls.

Later, choosing to follow Christ led to rejection within my family. These experiences strengthened my discipline, faith, and resolve. Challenges are not signs of failure; they are invitations to grow.

Progress is rarely achieved alone. Mentors played a critical role in shaping my academic development. Guidance from scholars such as Prof. Frednard Gideon, Prof. Peter Ouwehand, and Prof. Erik Schlogl helped refine my thinking and research direction.

Professional relationships built through conferences and collaboration opened doors I could not have accessed alone. Seek mentors, nurture professional networks, and remain open to learning from others.

Give Back to Your Community

Success carries responsibility. Giving back anchors achievement in purpose. Supporting a school in the Oshikoto region and helping establish a Namibian Society at Stellenbosch University were small but meaningful ways of contributing. When you share knowledge, time, or resources, you multiply opportunity beyond yourself and help shape a stronger future for others.

To Namibia’s youth, your journey holds immense potential. Pursue what inspires you, commit to learning, set clear goals, remain resilient, seek guidance, and never lose sight of your community.

With determination and integrity, you can shape a future that is both personally fulfilling and socially meaningful.

I wish you courage and clarity on the road ahead.
