EDITORIAL: Picking the modern Namibian diplomat

Namibia’s foreign service is at a crossroads. The world is changing at an unprecedented pace, yet our diplomatic corps often seems rooted in the past - relying on old methods, old networks, and recycled approaches.

The diplomat of today cannot succeed on reputation alone. Global relations are no longer conducted solely in boardrooms and banquet halls. Trade negotiations, climate diplomacy, digital engagement, regional security, and economic strategy demand innovation, adaptability, and deep understanding of complex systems. The modern diplomat must be a technocrat, a problem-solver, and a communicator fluent in the language of the 21st century.

Experience matters - but so do fresh ideas, energy, and vision. A small nation like Namibia cannot afford to send representatives abroad who are disconnected from global trends or unaware of emerging opportunities. Our diplomats must be able to navigate international markets, leverage digital platforms, build strategic alliances, and advocate for Namibia’s interests with authority and credibility.

Equally important is integrity. Modern diplomacy cannot tolerate the influence of cronyism, entitlement, or patronage. Namibia’s representatives must embody the values of transparency, competence, and national service, prioritising the country’s interests over personal networks.

Namibia has young, capable professionals with the skills, knowledge, and vision to step onto the global stage. It is time to empower them, not simply recycle the familiar faces of the past. Let the next generation of diplomats carry the nation forward - energetic, strategic, and unafraid to innovate.

The world is fast, complex, and unforgiving. Namibia deserves a foreign service that reflects its potential: modern, professional, and prepared for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow. It is time to let the veterans retire with dignity and open the doors to the capable, the visionary, the young.
