EDITORIAL: AR’s test of character

The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement faces the sternest test of its existence so far. The current internal strife, which has been brewing for quite some time but reached boiling point last week, is also a huge test of character for Job Amupanda as a leader with huge aspirations.Amupanda faces a mammoth task and aptitude in his political career as he battles an internal onslaught which is being used as cannon fodder to dislodge him from the throne he has had a firm grip on since he and others midwifed the movement in 2014.The challenge with AR, especially in a situation like this, is that nearly all its activists are like-minded, especially in their approach to conflict resolution. Short-fused, sharp-tongued and expletive-ridden.Thus, it is difficult to see who will compromise and be the proverbial ‘bigger person’ - the more mature, self-controlled man who, for the sake of the movement, backs off and allows calm and sanity to prevail.Every political formation needs balance between leaders who are calm and in control of their emotions in difficult situations, and those who are frank, outspoken and can speak truth to power. AR only has the latter.One extreme needs to dilute the other in order to attain balance of leadership and functionality. What we have seen so far in this AR dispute are two sides using the same tone and aggression to supposedly find a solution.
