EDITORIAL: A red line Judgement Day

Unless the High Court postpones its decision again, we will know today the outcome of Job Amupanda’s application for the removal of the red line – the veterinary cordon fence that has divided both opinion and people.Whatever the outcome, Amupanda has put up a valiant and righteous battle. It may have originated from a personal experience – after his meat was allegedly thrown away at Oshivelo some years ago – but so what?Here is a colonial demarcation that started as a disease-control measure, designed to protect livestock along racial lines, but which later morphed into a draconian instrument to control people and politics.Our erstwhile liberators, in their typical element, promised for three decades to remove the fence. In other words, they concur - as does Amupanda - that the fence has no place in an independent Namibia. But then cowardice gripped them, prompting them to limp from one excuse to another about why the fence should remain.Now, with Amupanda’s court challenge, the same leaders are in overdrive. In their hour of panic, they are behaving like a sugar daddy in a nightclub asking any of the remaining women to go home with him at the eleventh hour.In such moments, hasty decisions are made and the outcomes are often regretful. It doesn’t look good that a government for the people – and by the people – is in courts fighting to keep a punitive police zone designed to subjugate a segment of a modern-day free society.
