The youth must answer the own questions
Each generation, Frantz Fanon argues, must identify its mission to fulfil or betray it. These lucid words of one of our foremost African revolutionary intellectuals are often invoked by politicians to appear well-read and knowledgeable on subjects such as decoloniality. The politicians do not go a step further in actualising and assisting the youth to fulfil their chosen missions. In fact, most of the politicians, who have been and remains in power for decades, are often spotted standing opposed to the mission of the youth. Indeed, it has become a custom to subordinate the dreams and aspirations of the youth to slogans and elite serving notions of respect for elders and African traditionalism. But the youth must not despair. As Mangaliso Sobukwe told them, they must ask key questions and demand redress even in hostile environments. They must express themselves unambiguously and impenitently. Not every question they will ask needs an answer from the corrupt and greedy elite. There are, indeed, questions, that can be answered by themselves. As such, the youth must answer their own questions. This is what today’s conversation represents; asking and answering youth questions. This is the culture that must be promoted amongst our youth and students.
