If there was one thing that you wouldn’t want to lose on your body what would it be? For singer Sean K it would definitely be his voice! He literally told the doctors that anything else could go - just not his voice or vocal cords as he was ready to go into theatre. Sean K talks to tjil about his recovery and the debut album that had to be put on hold.
The recovery
I had what is known as a cavernous malformation which in simple terms is bleeding on the brain stem caused by nerves that developed abnormally. This wasn’t something that just developed randomly I have had it since birth. It has side effects like numbness on my face and weakness on the left side of my body. I saw a doctor about it and I ended up at Cape Town to have my surgery. It was rough but I had the support of my family, friends and the whole country at large. It was successful and I’m on the road to recovery, and I feel like I’m there although I do get headaches here and there. Ever since I found out that I had this, I only cried the day before the operation. I told the doctors that if anything had to go, it shouldn’t be my voice and they took special precautions to make sure. It may sound clichéd but one really appreciates life more when you have had a near-death experience.
The album
The brain surgery really pushed a lot of things back like my album but I’m on focusing on it now. I don’t want to say it’s done because I will be hounded for it but it’s coming together pretty well. It will have 11 tracks and it’s titled Status Updated. We were going through my social media posts and looking at some of the things I said so you will find that some of the songs have those phrases. I always say if you guys want an awesome album you will get one but it doesn’t take five minutes to make, it’s a lot of work. But it’s a great experience. The album focuses on everyday life, it has a very strong love theme; things like heartbreak and I don’t know where those things came from! There is fun in it too; I have a song called Turn up so overall, the album is pretty cool. If I had to describe it I would call it six tracks in the life of Sean K. The album will be released later this year.
What else is coming?
I will be performing at the FNCC “Acoustic Friday Featuring Sean K” and will perform all of my songs from the Status Updated album and do some covers too. It will be great for people to hear the album and hear what they like and the reasons to buy it. I want the name to be known not only in Namibia but the whole world. My ultimate goal is to bring home a Grammy for Namibia. If you want to do music, do it.
