The Rundu Chiefs Recreational Club donated food parcels to its football, netball and volleyball players as well as former players struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus pandemic.

The club also donated food parcels to 30 needy families in the Kavango East and Kavango West regions as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The parcels included maize meal, macaroni, cooking oil, tinned fish, corned beef, soup packets and sugar.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at Rundu on Wednesday, vice treasurer Gideon Mufenda said members of the club made contributions amounting to N$32 000, which was used to buy the food.

Close to 80 people benefited from the donations.

Gratitude

Football captain Jonas Kanyanga expressed his gratitude on behalf of his team, saying the donation came as a surprise.

“We were just told to come to the club house, not knowing that something so great was planned for us.

“As you can see, all the players got food and we are all happy for that,” he said.

Also speaking at the handover was newly appointed Kavango East regional governor Bonifatius Wakudumo, who happens to be a former Rundu Chiefs footballer.

History lesson

An excited Wakudumo gave a lengthy history lesson to the audience as he weighed in on the role Rundu Chiefs played during the liberation struggle.

“Today marks a great day, that Rundu Chiefs did not only play an important role during the liberation struggle of Namibia but also after independence as we are all witnessing the handing over the donation of food items to fight the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.

The governor also used the opportunity to call on other sports clubs and the business community to assist the needy during the pandemic.
