Namibia tackles region’s best dart teams
Namibia will be hoping to use home advantage to great effect after the Region V Darts championships kicked off at the Windhoek Showgrounds yesterday.
The tournament sees six countries competing for honours in senior, junior and veteran’s categories.
All categories have male and female sections, bringing Namibia’s representatives to 28 in total.
The other countries at the event are South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Malawi.
Zambia and Swaziland, who also fall under the Region V demarcation, are not attending. The championship is held every second year. Zimbabwe, who are the defending champions, hosted the last edition in 2014.
The next tournament is set to take place in Lesotho in 2018. During the previous tournament Namibia claimed medals through Ralph Ludwig (senior men), Melissa Reed, Franklin Moller and Virgil Bester (all juniors), Annelise van Brakel (senior women) and Lena Sowden (veteran).
A number of companies and institutions have come out in support of the hosting of the championships, with the Namibia Sport Commission, Baard Transport, Namibia Breweries, Embassy Bottle Store, Suide Distributors, NovaNam, Walvis Bay Troll, Evelyne Witte, Seal Products and the Lüderitz Town Council all making contributions. Although the action started yesterday already, the official opening ceremony will take place today at 16:00.
