Foundation makes 25 dreams come true
The ONE Economy Foundation yesterday announced the successful applicants of the Talented Individual Programme (TIP) at Windhoek High School in Windhoek.
TIP gives 25 young Namibians from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to attend either Windhoek High School or Windhoek Gymnasium for the next five years.
The idea behind the programme is to bridge the ever-widening economic gap in Namibia.
“The idea and plan is to move those Namibians living in the ‘second economy’ to the ‘first economy’,” said First Lady Monica Geingos, the founder of the ONE Economy Foundation.
She said the programme has been set up with a holistic development model in mind, where educational and personal development, spiritual welfare, career guidance and coaching are all incorporated to make sure that the students graduate as well-rounded individuals.
The First Lady cited statistics of the Ministry of Education to illustrate how more than 60% of all secondary school learners drop out before they reach grade 12.
She said TIP is one of the tools that can be used to level the playing field for all children in Namibia by offering quality education to children from disadvantaged and poor backgrounds.
“We need to create a functional environment and society that enables us to foster the talents of our children in manner that is sustainable,” she said.
“We want to spend this money to make sure that we develop talented individuals in our society, and not have those children left out because they are poor.”
TIP is set to spend N$3.2 million per year on the 25 selected students, with each student’s school fees accounting for about N$140 000.
The 25 lucky teenagers were selected from 25 000 applications.
