Eyambeko tournament launched
The first Eyambeko Annual Sports Tournament was launched at Outjo on Wednesday.
The tournament set for 1 to 3 December 2017 at the Etoshapoort Sports Stadium in Outjo aims to promote sports and development of football, volleyball, netball, rugby and semi-professional boxing.
Eyambeko construction company is the main sponsor of the event, with a total sponsorship of N$150 000.
Outjo constituency councillor Johannes Antsino on Wednesday officially launched the tournament in the presence of the president of the Namibian Boxing Federation, Benjamin Rebang.
Rebang said 21 fights with 37 semi-professional boxers from Ohangwena, Omusati, Kunene, Khomas, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Kavango West and Oshana regions are scheduled to take place.
“We thank you sincerely for organising this event. As for us it is a platform aimed at promoting our sport, boxing. I urge other local businesses to also do the same,” said Rebang.
Olympian boxers Jonas Junius and Mathias Hamunyela are among the boxers expected to participate.
Rebang said his office will select top young quality boxers who will represent Namibia at the 2018 Zone Four games in a country yet to be announced.
Cash prizes and medals will be won at the tournament.
Football clubs from the Namibian Defence Force and Namibian Police Force, Outjo and Grootfontein municipalities are among those expected to take part.
