Moyo builds MINDS around Pan-African leadership

From growing up in rural Zimbabwe to working in academia, banking, government and continental development, Dr Nkosana Moyo, founder and executive chair of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS), has built a career around leadership and Africa's future.His early life taught him discipline, responsibility and the importance of community, while his training as a physicist taught him to question assumptions and approach problems from first principles.Moving into business and finance showed him how institutions, capital and public policy can influence whether people's potential is realised.Working across Africa reinforced his belief that the continent has no shortage of talent, resources or ideas but needs capable institutions and leadership to turn these into sustainable progress.“Leadership is not simply a position. It is a responsibility to build systems and institutions that can continue working beyond the individual,” he says.Blueprint for Africa’s futureDr Moyo holds a PhD in Physics from Imperial College London and an MBA from Cranfield School of Management. His academic training underpins a career defined by analytical rigour, systems thinking and strategic leadership.The idea for MINDS took shape while Moyo was working at the African Development Bank.Established in 2010, the Pan-African think tank was created to help turn the aspirations of Pan-Africanism into practical action, combining research on African heritage and institutional development with dialogue, networking and leadership development. Its work helps shape policies grounded in local knowledge and values, supporting socio-economic progress across the continent.Over the years, Moyo says his understanding of leadership has evolved beyond individual competence to include strong institutions, public trust, accountability and the ability to bring people together.“A leader must understand the environment in which they are operating, listen carefully and bring different people together around a shared purpose,” he says.Among his proudest achievements is seeing MINDS reach its 15-year milestone and grow into a genuinely Pan-African institution. For him, its greatest impact lies in developing people and strengthening connections across the continent."Through MINDS I would like to contribute towards the remake of an Africa that is self-assured based on competent management of its affairs and a keen sense of self-awareness," he says.Looking towards the future, Moyo hopes his legacy will be measured through strong institutions and capable people.“Legacy is not about having one’s name placed on a building. It is about whether people think differently, lead more responsibly and build institutions that serve society more effectively because of the work you contributed.”
