Awarab joins Namibia’s legal fraternity

Prof Marvin Awarab has marked his admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Namibia, adding legal practice to his academic and leadership experience.For Awarab, the admission represents the integration of legal theory and practice after years of academic study, practical training and examinations.“Becoming an admitted legal practitioner is a monumental milestone that marks the culmination of years of gruelling academic study, intense practical training, and rigorous examinations,” he told Careers.Awarab holds a Baccalaureus Juris degree and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Namibia, followed by a Master of Laws from the University of Cape Town and a Doctor of Laws qualification from the University of South Africa. His academic career at the University of Namibia includes serving as a lecturer and head of department. He has lectured and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students, examined postgraduates' theses, and published books in areas including labour, contract law and telecommunications law.His admission followed practical training at Ileni Velikoshi Incorporated, where he served as a candidate legal practitioner under the guidance of the firm’s director, Ileni Velikoshi. Awarab said the admission complements his role as dean of the faculty of law, commerce and education at Welwitschia University.“As a dean, I am responsible for shaping the curriculum, steering institutional strategy, and producing practice-ready graduates. By formalising my status within the legal fraternity, I ensure that my leadership is rooted not just in theory, but in the live, operational pulse of the law,” he said. In his role as dean, Awarab focuses on academic excellence, institutional growth, research innovation and impactful teaching, with priorities including curriculum development, high teaching standards and strengthening the research environment. He said his legal experience will strengthen practical legal education at Welwitschia University, giving students exposure to the realities of legal practice and helping them develop market-ready skills. Looking ahead, Awarab wants Namibian legal education to align with global benchmarks through stronger research, modernised curricula and regional and international collaboration. He also highlighted the need to strengthen practical training for graduates. For young professionals, his message centres on resilience and continuous learning.“Commit to excellence and maintain an unyielding courage to grow,” Awarab said.
