UNAM confirms grade 11 not enough for admission

All prospective undergraduate students at the University of Namibia (UNAM) must apply using a combination of Grade 11 results and Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level results, whether they are pursuing a Diploma or a Degree. This requirement applies across all programmes, including Medicine, Engineering, and Law, none of which accept Grade 11 results alone.

According to UNAM spokesperson Simon Namesho, the old Diploma programmes that previously accepted Grade 11 learners were phased out when UNAM restructured its undergraduate qualifications.

The university aligns all programmes with the levels set by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA), which has the legal mandate to set and register qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Grade 11 learners are therefore encouraged to continue to AS Level, as this remains the recognised pathway for admission.

Even the UNAM Readiness Programme, a government-funded bridging initiative for learners who attempted AS, NSSCH, or HIGCSE but did not meet normal entry requirements, requires applicants to have attempted AS Level or an equivalent. Successful completion of the programme may allow entry into mainstream Diploma or Degree studies, depending on performance.

The 2026 comprehensive undergraduate admission requirements confirm that all prospective students must submit combined Grade 11 and AS Level results for any Diploma or Degree programme. The criteria include a unified evaluation scale that converts grades from NSSC, GCE, Cambridge, IB, the Senior Certificate, and other recognised qualifications into points ranging from 10 to 3. This scale ensures fairness across examination systems and aligns all programme levels with the classifications set by the NQA.

UNAM stresses that these requirements apply across all 12 campuses, namely Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Oshakati, Hifikepunye Pohamba, José Eduardo dos Santos, Ogongo, Windhoek Main Campus, Khomasdal, Hage Geingob, Neudamm, Sam Nujoma, and the Southern Campus in Keetmanshoop.
