Starke at 75: Ready for the next generation

Celebrating 75 years of growth and resilience

Namibian company Starke, known for its expertise in air conditioning systems and sheet metal fabrication, is marking an impressive milestone today - 75 years in business.

The company’s journey began on 6 April 1951, when founder Horst Werner Starke started a small plumbing business. From those modest beginnings, Starke has grown into a respected name in the industry, while remaining proudly family-owned.

Richard Starke, who took over the business around 38 years ago, says stepping into the role felt natural. “It was simply the perfect fit between what I had already learned and what the company was doing,” he explains, reflecting on his path from radio and television technician to refrigeration systems engineer.

A key turning point came in 1991, when the company partnered with Uwe Grüttemeyer and expanded into Starke Manufacturing and Airconditioning CC. “That was an important step for our further development,” says Starke.

Based in the northern industrial area since 1970, the company has built a reputation as a technological leader in Namibia. Starke attributes this to a strong focus on quality, with machinery sourced from countries like Germany, Japan and Switzerland.

Today, the company employs 38 people, many of whom have been part of the journey for decades. “Almost all of our staff are long-term employees. Some have been with us for twenty to thirty-five years,” Starke says. At the same time, the company is investing in the future by training young Namibians and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Like many long-standing businesses, the road has not always been easy. Starke recalls demanding periods, including major projects in Swakopmund and Windhoek that required long hours and overnight work. “But those challenges helped us stay competitive, even against companies from South Africa,” he says.

Looking ahead, Starke is confident about the future. A new generation of leadership is already stepping up. “These people are now running the show,” he says - a sign that the company is ready for its next chapter.
