Swakopmund fire chief heads to Romania for training
Swakopmund municipality's chief fire officer, Bainga Matengu, is attending training in Romania from 4 to 8 September.
This after the ministry of urban and rural development, through the ministry of international relations and cooperation, sent an invitation for a fully-funded emergency management assistance programme offered by the Romanian government.
The ministries invited three local authority councils - Ongwediva, Swakopmund, and Mariental - to participate in the training.
"The final selection of participants will be conducted by the government of Romania, which will cover all expenses: Transportation, both domestic and international; accommodation, and meals. On the other hand, as per the [Swakopmund] council's travel policy, the council is required to cover the normal subsistence and travelling expenses (S&T)."
The council recommended that special leave be granted to Matengu to attend the programme. It also recommended that travel costs of N$16 020 be paid to the chief fire officer. The council further recommended that he submit a report to the management committee after the training.
"It's crucial that the management committee supports the nomination of our chief fire officer to participate in this training as it will create a superior academic experience for [Matengu] in the critical service of fire and rescue, as well as emergency medical services," the municipality said.
