Shikongo ‘back to work soon’ amid calls for probe
Inspector-general of the Namibian Police, Joseph Shikongo - who was injured in a car accident at the end of 2022 - said he is recovering at home and will report for duty soon, amid calls to criminally charge him.
Shikongo told Namibian Sun yesterday that once he is back in office, it will be business as usual as he will be handing over police barracks built for officers at Onamafila in the Ohangwena Region.
The police chief was discharged from Ongwediva Medipark hospital last Monday and is recuperating at his village home in northern Namibia.
The accident occurred at Iindangungu village on the Ondangwa-Oshikango main road at about 01:00 on Friday, 30 December, when Shikongo's private vehicle - a white Toyota Hilux double cab - collided head-on with a white Hyundai hatchback.
All three occupants of the Hyundai died on the spot. The sole survivor of the crash, Shikongo was rushed to hospital for medical attention and spent the weekend there.
He said while he is out of the hospital, he is still on sick leave and taking prescribed medication. He did not give an exact date when he will be back at work, but said it will be “soon”.
Shikongo added that he did not suffer any permanent injuries.
The deceased were identified as Frans Pombili Ndengu (27) from Omena village, Sofia Natangwe Ananias (22) from Onekwaya West village and Stefanus Hafeni Shahafifange Lukas (22) from Eendobe village.
A case of culpable homicide and negligent driving is being investigated.
No sympathy
Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) economic commissar Michael Amushelelo, who himself has had several run-ins with the law, has called for Shikongo’s arrest and resignation.
“We can’t be sympathetic towards the police general while we have three families who have lost their loved ones,” he said.
“I personally faced the music 12 years ago when I was also involved in a car accident. I was arrested and had to appear in court to face justice,” he added.
In 2015, Amushelelo was found guilty of driving without a licence and causing an accident due to speeding in 2010. The crash left one dead and another paralysed.
“If no one is above the law, Joseph Shikongo must be arrested by tomorrow,” he said.
