Pensioner burns to death
Police in the Oshikoto Region have been unable to establish how a 102-year-old woman burned to death in her room last weekend.
The pensioner from Engovi village was reportedly not a smoker and did not use candles.
The incident took place early on Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson, Inspector Ellen Nehale, said it is alleged that Elizabeth Uupindi burnt to death after her bedding caught fire while she was sleeping.
The pensioner was sleeping alone and there was no one else in her room at the time of the incident, she said.
“However, there were other people sleeping in other housing structures in the same compound,” she said.
Nehale added that the cause of the fire is not known.
Her remains have been transported to the Onandjokwe hospital mortuary for an autopsy. Police investigations into the matter continue.
Baby raped
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police in the Omusati Region arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly raping a three-month-old baby at Iishanaputa village in the Onesi constituency.
Crime investigation coordinator Moses Simaho said the incident took place last Saturday afternoon.
It is alleged that the suspect raped the baby when she was left in his care by her mother. The mother had gone to buy something from a nearby cuca shop.
The suspect, the baby and her mother all live in the same house.
Simaho said a case has been opened and the suspect is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court this week.
