Oshikuku allocates plots to low-income earners

Tuyeimo Haidula
The Oshikuku Town Council has reiterated its promise to provide affordable housing solutions for ultra-low- and low-income earners, saying “no one will be left out”.

Mayor Julia Endjambi made these remarks recently at a handover of 23 plots to members of the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN).

She said the allocation of these plots marks a significant step forward in ongoing efforts to ensure that all residents have a place to call home.

The town council is actively working towards bridging the gap in housing affordability and accessibility within the community, she added.

According to Endjambi, the council remains committed to ensuring that when the town gets land, a certain number of erven are reserved for the Build Together Programme and SDFN beneficiaries.

To date, the Oshikuku council has allocated 62 erven to SDFN, in addition to the ones handed over last Thursday.

Basic human right

“Decent housing is a basic human right that needs to be met for one to be dignified. Although council is committed to avail affordable land to meet such a need, it is faced with numerous challenges to do so,” the mayor said.

These challenges include: Unavailability of land, limited financial resources to service land and shortage of internal capacity to meet land-delivery targets.

Endjambi said Oshikuku is rededicating itself to the provision of affordable residential land for the next five years, as envisioned in its soon-to-be-launched strategic plan themed ‘Let’s Go Home’.

She appealed to stakeholders work with them, adding that the town council cannot do it alone.

Endjambi also used the platform to urge the recipients of the erven to develop them within the prescribed time frame in order to provide their families with a roof over their heads.

She added that recipients should pay off their plots on time and continue honouring their municipal bills in order for the council to have funds to service more land for other beneficiaries.
