Oshana prioritises Eheke development

In a stakeholder engagement at Eheke late last month, the Oshana regional leadership engaged community members on the development of the settlement and the region in general.

Ondangwa Rural constituency councillor Abraham Kaushiweni said Eheke has both economic and social development potential to uplift residents’ living standards.

“Which is why, as the leadership of Oshana regional council, we conducted this consultation in order to listen to the views of the public on how we can develop the settlement area together,” he said.

According to council chairperson Andreas Uutoni, the occasion is special because government has adopted a people-centred approach to development where public participation is crucial.

“This engagement is therefore very important to both the Oshana regional leadership and the community because the sustainable development of Eheke settlement area and Oshana Region in general depends on us all working together.”

Uutoni went on to applaud community members’ hard work.

“The level of development at Eheke settlement area today is testament of all your efforts as members of the community. The desired level of future development will also depend on our commitment today,” he said.

Challenges

Meanwhile, governor Elia Irimari raised concerns about some challenges plaguing the area.

“Settlement areas face challenges in their potential to develop because of many obstacles, of which some have to do with land ownership policies. I am encouraging open dialogue so that we can identify impediments in the development process,” he said.

He added that sustainable urbanisation is a daunting task.

“The government has been working around the clock to find best modalities that promote inclusively in housing sector. I believe that settlement areas provide an opportunity for low-income earners to access land to develop their houses and businesses.”
