Mbumba congratulates SA on peaceful elections

News in short
STAFF REPORTER
President Nangolo Mbumba has praised South Africa following the conclusion of elections in that country, saying it set an example for its neighbours.

On Wednesday, 29 May, millions of South Africans went to the polls to exercise their right to vote. Mbumba said this right was denied to the black majority for close to a century.

Democracy is about the sovereign will of the people and the will of the people of South Africa was demonstrated through the announcement of the final results on Sunday evening, he said.

Frustrated with joblessness, inequality and power shortages, South Africans slashed support for the African National Congress (ANC) to 40%, ending three decades of dominance by the party that freed the country from apartheid.

“As a neighbouring and sister country, Namibia takes pride in the manner in which the people of South Africa conducted an exemplary election, which reinforced peace and stability as a precondition for development,” Mbumba said.

He pledged to further strengthen Namibia’s relations with South Africa for the mutual benefit of the two nations.-STAFF REPORTER
