//Karas development: All eyes on oil finds, green hydrogen

//Karas governor Aletha Frederick says the region is gearing up to become the country’s newest development haven, and will position itself accordingly to benefit from the recent discovery of large crude oil reserves off Namibia’s southern coast and the much-talked-about green hydrogen project. While job creation, infrastructure development and improving the lives of the communities in the region took centre stage in her state of the region address last week, she was quick to point out that the regional leadership will continue placing pressure on government to decentralise services by taking them closer to the people, especially in the education sector. Her address centred a new dawn that focuses on development and utilising the resources on offer in the region to lift communities out of the deep trenches of poverty.Frederick said she is confident that the recent oil finds, the Neckartal Dam and the green hydrogen project will be a boon to the region. These projects, she said, will bring a significant rise in employment creation in the region.InfrastructureAccording to Frederick, while the region has been lagging behind in terms of adequate infrastructure over the years, the situation is improving gradually.A request to build new primary schools in Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop is currently being evaluated by the National Planning Commission, she said.A delighted Frederick added that renovation has been done at two centres that were identified to receive rehabilitation, namely the Women for Action Development Centre and the Keetmanshoop Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre. "I am proud to announce that both centres are now fully equipped and operational following the generous sponsorship from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency. The agency, she said, refurbished and equipped the Keetmanshoop Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Centre’s computer lab with 19 new computers, chairs and a projector to the tune of over N$350 0000. Regional clashesMeanwhile, Frederick was not entirely happy with the work of the //Karas regional council, adding that she feels it is not embracing transparency and accountability. She said the council is hiding key information from the public related to funds that were allocated for regional development.According to the governor, the council has for three consecutive years declined requests by her office to convene a special council meeting to reveal the information for public consumption. "My assumption is that the regional council does not want the public to know what they have done with the funds that were provided for regional development,” she said.
