Institute gives 19-year-old scholarship

The Ngato Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) has awarded 19-year-old inventor Vicentius Gambinda Kapumburu a three-year full scholarship after seeing his homemade electricity innovation. Kapumburu, a Grade 3 dropout from Gewagi village in Kavango West, caught attention after developing a homemade system that generates electricity from discarded materials. NIST board member Laurens Thabo said the scholarship will take Kapumburu from Level 1 to Level 3 to study Solar Equipment Installation and Maintenance, covering tuition, accommodation, meals, books and other study materials. Thabo said the scholarship recognises Kapumburu’s commitment to education and his potential, with his studies set to begin on 7 September 2026.
