Guard fatally shot in hotel robbery

Ellanie Smit
In the early hours of yesterday morning, three suspects robbed Town Lodge Windhoek hotel and fatally shot a security guard who responded to the incident.

According to the police, the three suspects entered the Kleine Kuppe hotel - located next to Lady Pohamba Private Hospital and the Grove Mall - at about 04:00 in the morning.

They approached the 40-year-old receptionist, pointed two firearms at him and demanded that he open the safe.

He, however, did not have the code for the safe and when he told the suspects this, they apparently started beating him and pistol-whipped him over the head.

The receptionist managed to press the panic button. The suspects fled the building with his cellphone and N$1 300 in cash when they heard the armed response vehicle approaching.

The suspects exchanged fire with the security guard – identified as Armando Gawanab (28), who arrived alone - and he was shot in the process.

Gawanab drove himself to the nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.
