Garbage dump plagues Omadhiya

Residents of Omadhiya in Omuthiya are dissatisfied with a dumpsite, which they say poses a severe health risk to residents in addition to other problems.This is because of an abundance of flies. Residents claimed that flies proliferate around the dumpsite, which has become a "maggot breeding ground."As a result, homesteads in the surrounding area are plagued by flies, and in addition, the garbage emits foul smells.Moreover, when the garbage is burned, the smoke creates a stench that residents describe as unbearable, which attracts even more flies and pests.A plagueRichard Roe, a resident of Omadhiya, says that when it rains, the pollution becomes even worse, and it also puts the children at risk and affects their health.Roe added that they are unable to prepare their meals without attracting flies.Lydia Mathias, another resident, said rotten food being dumped poses a health hazard and that she wants the garbage site totally removed so they can live a normal life.Politics roped inIn a letter to the town&#039;s acting chief executive officer, Simon Nghulondo, the residents demand that a permanent solution be found and that the town council relocate the dumping site or the residents.Nghulondo was not available to comment on the matter.When contacted for comment, the town’s mayor, Johanness Ndeutepo, claimed that there is nothing wrong with the dumpsite and that the residents are in fact not the ones complaining."It is not the residents, it is those people from the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC); it is a political ploy, and I will rather not comment any further. If there are residents complaining, then they should register their complaint with the town council so that it can be addressed," he said.ConcernDeputy mayor Petrina Shindinge, however, in a telephone interview, said the people who reside near the dumpsite are suffering."My concern is for their health, because it is a health hazard for the community members, and this issue has been going on for some time now," she said.Shindinge said as a leadership, they should put politics aside and do something to remove the community members from this health hazard, as it is their duty to care for the wellbeing of the people."I just want things to be done procedurally; as a leadership, we are now putting the community members&#039; health at risk, and I don’t want to be part of such a leadership," she concluded.Consultation questionsThe disposal site was set up in 2009 without proper consultation with the residents.When Namibian Sun visited Michael Andreas, the Omadhiya homestead&#039;s headman, and asked him how the dumpsite got there, Andreas replied, "Do not ask me, I am not the owner of the dumpsite; ask the municipality."He added that he is just the headman of the people in his village, but he was never informed about the situation."Members of the town council came to consult community members about the situation without
