EDITORIAL: Namibians are spoiled - but so what?

In April 2016, the Ruacana hydroelectric facility tripped, resulting in a nationwide power outage in Namibia. People were furious since it was the first time electricity had been out throughout the entire nation.In the midst of our anger, a random dude in Nigeria tweeted that Namibians are ‘spoiled’. He said power outages are a daily lived experience elsewhere in Africa.It is great that Namibians are leaving no room for complacency and are demanding the very best from those we have elected into power. But in so doing, and without praising the fish for swimming, we go about our days forgetting that - in certain aspects - we are ridiculously blessed to the point of absurdity.Of course we did not get here by clapping hands for every small win registered by our government and other service providers. We had to whine and gripe till our throats hurt. If we didn’t, we would resemble the Africa that the Nigerian man described, where even a reliable power supply in large cities is a rare occurrence. Inevitably, it’s ingrained in the very being of humans that no matter how good things get, we all continue to seek a better life.When political leaders beat their chests about their small victories, let’s applaud them and – in that very moment – ask them to do even better. They cannot rest on their laurels and take their feet off the pedal of service delivery.
