Keramin-Beukes was fatally shot in front of her two-year-old child last week.
The death of Johanna Keramin-Beukes, reportedly at the hands of her police officer husband, has shed light on a marriage plagued by domestic violence and a trail of police reports.
Keramin-Beukes was fatally shot in an apparent murder-suicide while she was attending choir practice at the AGS church in Mariental, according to the police.
Her husband, chief inspector Michael Beukes, killed her in the presence of their two-year-old child last Thursday afternoon before shooting himself in the head in front of his house - with a pistol which was recorded stolen in June last year.
Cases opened
Police records show a number of domestic violence cases opened against Beukes.
20 September 2022: Keramin-Beukes filed for a protection order against her husband.
22 September 2022: She accused Beukes of domestic violence and he was then arrested, charged and detained in Mariental.
23 September 2022: The suspect appeared before the Mariental Magistrate’s Court where he remained in custody and the case was postponed to 7 November to obtain legal representation.
5 October 2022: The suspect appeared in court, and was granted bail of N$1 500 with terms and conditions.
12 October 2022: Keramin-Beukes withdrew the 20 September protection order.
23 January: Both the victim and the suspect appeared in court for a plea and trial, during which the victim withdrew the criminal case against her husband.
7 March: Keramin-Beukes complained to the office of internal investigation sub-division in Mariental that she was assaulted by her husband; however, did not want to lay criminal charges against him. The victim was then called in by senior management where her official statement was taken.
8 March: The Mariental police confiscated Beukes‘ private pistol.
14 March: The victim again applied for a protection order. The matter was set for 28 April, but the court date was then postponed to 12 May.
4 May: Keramin-Beukes was fatally shot by the suspect. Beukes then shot himself in front of their marital home shortly after. The pistol used was reported stolen on 7 June 2022 and the tracing of its rightful owner is still ongoing.
