Gospel singer in court for alleged rape
Gospel singer and motivational speaker Alexander Shiwayu (34) was recently arrested and made multiple court appearances for allegedly raping a member of choir he leads at a local university.
He was arrested on 8 April and appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Monica Andjaba, who granted him bail last Monday. He faces one count of rape, read with the provisions of the Combating of Rape Act. Sylvia Kauluma, Rowan van Wyk and Amize Adams prosecuted respectively during his court appearances.
Shiwayu was granted bail of N$3 000 during his final court appearance, according to court documents. The matter has been adjourned to 5 July.
The ‘God is Great All The Time’ singer allegedly raped a 22-year-old university student on 15 March in Windhoek’s Dorado Park.
“The suspect unlawfully and intentionally had sexual intercourse with the victim without her consent,” a police report on the incident read.
Namibian Sun understands that Shiwayu reportedly forced the victim to have anal sex after he found out she was menstruating.
‘Men of God’
The incident has sparked outrage about the conduct of self-proclaimed ‘men of God’, following a recent spate of arrests of rape-accused preachers.
It is understood that the dean of students at the university has launched an investigation into the matter. Shiwayu is an alumnus at the institution.
A student leader at the university said: “In the event that the allegations are true and he’s found guilty, we will stand by our student. We will make sure that the victim is protected. We are also trying to get students to talk. They have been saying a lot, but nothing concrete to help us come to the bottom of this case”.
Shiwayu’s bail conditions are that he is not to have any direct or indirect contact with the alleged victim, that he is not allowed to leave Windhoek without the consent of the investigating officer, and that he must refrain from interfering with police investigations.
