Roads Authority tightens checks on Hong Kong-imported vehicles

Vehicles with fraudulent or unverifiable registration documents will be rejected, with suspected fraud potentially referred to police for investigation.

The Roads Authority (RA) continues to process applications to register vehicles imported from Hong Kong, but only if their registration details and supporting documents can be verified with the relevant authorities.

In a statement issued on 16 October, RA corporate communications manager Hileni Fillemon said the authority had recently seen a significant increase in applications involving vehicles whose registration, ownership documents or other particulars could not be verified or were found to be fraudulent.

Such vehicles cannot be registered because they do not comply with the Road Traffic and Transport Regulations of 2001, she said.

Fillemon said verification was compulsory for all applications involving Hong Kong-imported vehicles, and applications that failed the process would be rejected.

Documents suspected of being fraudulent, altered or unverifiable would not be accepted. Cases could also be referred to the Namibian Police (NamPol) for investigation and possible prosecution.

Applicants were urged to ensure that all documents and vehicle details were genuine, accurate and verifiable before submitting applications, to avoid delays, rejection or potential legal consequences.

“The RA cannot and will not register any vehicle that does not satisfy the verification and compliance requirements, regardless of the circumstances presented by the applicant,” the statement said.

Fillemon said the authority remained committed to facilitating the legitimate registration of vehicles imported from Hong Kong while upholding the law and protecting the public interest.

Applicants who need guidance on the requirements can contact Bennie Spiegell at the Roads Authority on 061 284 7200 or by email at [email protected].
