Over 200 houses handed over at Oshikuku

Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni handed over 219 houses to new homeowners in Oshikuku on Monday. This forms part of various policy interventions by government to ensure that bottlenecks in the provision of decent housing are addressed, he said.Uutoni noted that although decent housing is a basic human right, making sure everyone has access to it remains a challenge. As a result, residents have to wait longer to own a house and have the security of homeownership, he said. “It thus pleasing to take note and appreciate the efforts made by different stakeholders in meeting government halfway in the provision of houses to all without discrimination. However, government remains committed to address the housing shortages,” Uutoni said. The numbers Of the 219 houses handed over, 17 were built through the Build Together programme, while 62 houses were built by the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) through its community saving schemes. Meanwhile, 140 homes were built through a public-private partnership between the Oshikuku town council and Easy United Holdings.“I am also informed that council has recently availed over 30 semi-serviced erven to SDFN and 10 fully serviced to Build Together beneficiaries with a budget provision amounting to N$800 000 in the 2023/24 budget,” Uutoni said.He added that he is pleased to see the town council availing serviced land for housing purposes. Meet us halfwayThe minister further appealed to the private sector to continue meeting government and its agencies halfway in its efforts to provide housing to Namibian people. “I am fully cognisant of the fact that yours is a profit-driven existence; however, as you seek to maximise return on investment, let’s take into account our reputation when we operate business in areas where your clients are in abject poverty. This reflects on us all as a society,” Uutoni said. Omusati Region governor Erginus Endjala applauded the town council and encouraged its leaders to continue to make more land available for low- to middle-income earners. This, he said, will not only help to expand the town in size, but will also increase the council’s revenue base in future.
