Landless People’s Movement (LPM) candidate Willem Labuschagne - who won the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency by-election on Monday evening - said his mission will be prescribed by the party, but added that development is his main focus.

Celebrations by LPM supporters already started before voting commenced and included a drive through Aroab and dancing in the main street.

Labuschagne told the media in the early hours of Tuesday that he is really proud that LPM did so well, adding that this will give them an opportunity to work hard to make sure they uplift the community.

“To help the people get ahead and to give them stability. It is not about building pavilions but about economic growth and to make sure the residents have an income, are self-sustainable and stable. Then everything falls in place.

“I have suggestions on what to do, but at the end of the day, the party dictates,” he said.

Land a priority

Labuschagne won with 1 270 votes, followed by Swapo’s Elias Kharuxas who got 872 and independent candidate Gerrit Witbooi’s 463 votes.

The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) received 275 votes, while the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) received only 32.

A total of 2 912 votes were cast, of which 16 were rejected ballots. Counting and collation, which took place at the Aroab constituency office, ended at about 03:00 on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to journalists before the results were announced, Labuschagne said like his party, land will be a priority for him.

“Land must be made available. There is a lot of land that can be made available to make sure everyone has a piece of land. If you don’t have ownership of this land, you cannot build."
