Close to 300 000 reliant on small-scale fisheries

Ellanie Smit
Over 280 000 Namibians’ livelihoods depend on the small-scale fisheries sub-sector.

The fisheries and marine resources ministry, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the Benguela Current Convention, will launch Namibia's national plan of action for small-scale fisheries next week.

The event will take place on 8 and 9 June in Swakopmund.

The plan of action is significant as it validates the importance of small-scale fisheries and serves to highlight fish as an important socio-economic livelihood option, food source and nutritional security for Namibians.

Celebrate

The ministry commenced with the process of developing the plan of action in 2020. It is premised on the voluntary guidelines for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication.

“Development of the plan was supported by over 350 representatives from key offices, local and traditional authorities, small-scale fisheries actors, marine resource harvesters and partners,” a statement issued by the ministry said.

In recognition of the small-scale fisheries sector, the launch of the plan is being celebrated and commemorated with a year of artisanal fisheries and aquaculture in support of the global action plan for supporting small-scale fisheries and World Ocean Day celebrations.

Validation

Namibia’s World Ocean Day celebrations will take place on 10 and 11 June in Walvis Bay, with plenty of activities to be enjoyed by the public.

“The event and celebration aim to validate the importance and significance of small-scale fisheries in Namibia, enhance the understanding of the current status of small-scale fisheries for both inland and marine, raise awareness on the importance and viability of the sector, promote capacity development and support towards sustainable resource utilisation and improved governance for artisanal and small-scale fisheries in Namibia.”
