Swapo heavyweights join calls for action against same-sex marriages
#JustIn #WhatsAppProtest
A WhatsApp group titled 'Namibia National Anti-Gay Marriage Demonstration' was created on Ascension Day and had already attracted more than 1 000 members, including several Swapo heavyweights such as home affairs minister Albert Kawana, labour minister Utoni Nujoma, former police chief Sebastian Ndeitunga, as well as presidential press secretary Alfredo Hengari, by Thursday evening.
The group's creation was sparked by a Supreme Court ruling on Tuesday, which found that Namibia must recognise and duly register same-sex marriages officiated outside Namibia. Suggestions raised by the group range from church-led protests, handing over petitions to the home affairs ministry and parliament, as well as countrywide protest marches.
A petition by the Coalition of Churches and Organisations argues that the case of Digashu and Seiler-Lilles against the Ministry of Home Affairs was not about seeking equality but about demanding to be treated above the Namibian Constitution and law.
