Skeleton Coast
'GATES OF HELL': One of the most pristine, secluded and wind-swept beaches in Namibia has been designated as one of the world's top beaches. The Skeleton Coast ranks ninth on a unique list of 100 of the world's top beaches, as designated by BeachAtlas.
BeachAtlas describes the Skeleton Coast, which sailors and explorers once called the ‘Gates of Hell’, as a remote stretch in Namibia where the Benguela Current meets the desert.
"The ominous name comes from the skeletons of whales and various shipwrecks scattered along its shores," BeachAtlas noted, adding: “This inhospitable yet fascinating area showcases the sharp beauty and relentless challenge of nature."
