MTC boosts rural education
School upgrades totalling N$1.6 million
Onaushe is one of several schools in the region struggling with a shortage of classrooms.
The Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) rural school project handed over four new classrooms and a storeroom worth N$849 000 to Onaushe Combined School in the Oshana Region last week.
The project, launched in July 2020, aims to renovate dilapidated schools with inadequate or no structures.
MTC partnered with the education ministry, and committed to construct new classrooms or renovate existing ones to ensure that every Namibian child learns in a conducive and safe environment.

Onaushe Combined School joined Aussenkehr Primary School in the //Karas Region as this year’s selected beneficiaries. The upgrades cost around N$1.6 million in total.
MTC's chief human capital, corporate affairs and marketing officer, Tim Ekandjo, said every Namibian child deserves to be educated in a decent and uplifting classroom, as they are the future leaders of Namibia.
Use this chance
Oshana education director Hileni Amukana thanked MTC for what she termed a “massive investment” to the education sector.
She used the opportunity to encourage learners to study hard and urged them not to waste the chance to succeed.
Onaushe is one of several schools in the region struggling with a shortage of classrooms and other infrastructure.
The school still lacks decent classrooms for grades four, eight and nine.
The school, built in the 1960s, is currently home to 333 learners.
Elia Irimari, governor of Oshana Region, stressed that being taught in a conducive environment is a key contributor to learners performing well and achieving good grades.
She said it is destructive and demoralising for both learners and teachers when teaching and learning takes place under a tree or in a building close to collapsing.
