A man is accused of deliberately ploughing his car into a crowd in Omaruru on Sunday, injuring seven people.

The suspect, Geormanus Awarab (33), was arrested on charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and attempted murder.

The incident occurred early on Sunday morning at RVO Bar, police said.

It is alleged that a fight broke out between a group of men before one of them got into a black Volkswagen Golf and deliberately drove through a group of people standing outside the bar, knocking down seven individuals.

The victims – five men and two women aged between 19 and 39 – sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were treated at Omaruru District Hospital. Two of the victims remain hospitalised.

Awarab made his first appearance in the Omaruru Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was granted bail of N$1 500. The case was postponed to 22 June. Police investigations are ongoing.
