ACC lauds Mbumba’s anti-corruption tone

The Anti-Corruption Corruption Commission (ACC) has commended President Nangola Mbumba for urging ministries to take on the fight against corruption. During the opening of Cabinet this week, Mbumba urged government ministers to proactively ensure instances of corruption are reported and acted upon. Praising the president for his stance, the anti-graft agency said corruption had a negative impact on society in the long-term. “Corruption causes corrosive damage with long-term effects on the economy. Corruption undermines the values of democracy, rule of law and good governance. Often, the less-privileged citizens suffer the consequences of corruption while [it benefits a] few individuals,” it said. The ACC also implored government to devise mechanisms to ensure Namibia’s natural resources are not exploited, and yield greater benefit for its citizens in the long-term. “Natural resources must be safeguarded and extracted to benefit Namibian citizens as first priority. Citizens are sovereign owners of the natural resources. In this regard, the energy sector is vital to the economy and development.”Transparency is key The ACC also called on government to ensure natural resources are managed in a transparent manner to discourage instances where exploitation could occur. “Transparency in this sector is most valuable, as it helps to prevent looting and foreign exploitation of natural resources to the detriment the citizens and the economy,” it said. “Therefore, the policy measures must provide for greater transparency on contracts signed with foreign investors and shareholders as well as timely and regular reports on revenue and distribution of such revenue. Most vital to openness is a measure providing for the disclosure of direct and indirect beneficial owners.”Earlier this week, Mbumba said government would double its efforts to fight corruption. “Some of our citizens have expressed concerns regarding corruption in the budding energy sector. Let me assure all Namibians that in line with our government’s clear resolve to promote accountability and transparency, we will continue to strengthen the policy measures aimed to fight corruption.”
