MTC pledges N$12.5m to CSI initiatives

Elizabeth //Kheibes
Telecommunications giant MTC yesterday announced its 2023/2024 corporate social investment (CSI) projects, revealing that it will avail N$12.5 million towards 15 initiatives across the education, health and environment sectors, among others.

These projects will be funded until 2025.

During the official announcement, chief human capital and corporate affairs officer Tim Ekandjo called on the corporate sector to join MTC in its quest to make a change.

"There is no need for competition when it comes to making a change. Our children are the future of Namibia and we need to continue caring for them and give them hope," he said.

The largest portion (N$3.4 million) of the financial support will go towards the MTC Rural Schools project. So far, MTC has constructed and handed over 37 classrooms and eight storerooms in eight regions at a cost of N$8.3 million, the compay said.

Ministry’s wage bill

Otto Knox Imbuwa, the education ministry’s deputy executive director for finance, said he had no words to express the ministry's gratitude for the massive contribution towards the development of infrastructure.

"Thank you, MTC, for stepping up and showing that you care for the educational well-being of the Namibian child. Education receives the biggest chunk of the national budget and people are probably wondering why the ministry receives more.

“We deploy the bulk of our budget to operational activities. This year alone, we have about N$16.3 billion, and 85% of that goes to the wage bill. Only N$577 million goes towards capital infrastructure.”

Imbuwa added that MTC’s efforts will allow the ministry to create space in the workforce for unemployed qualified teachers.

A home for each Namibian

According to Ekandjo, MTC has dedicated N$1 million yearly for the past three years to its land delivery programme, which has aided in the development of 2 290 plots in 10 residential neighborhoods in six towns.

"I dream that one day, every Namibian will own their own home.”

MTC partnered up with Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) for this project, which will run till 2025, totalling N$3 million over three years. DWN's programme manager for land and housing, Ester Veiko, thanked MTC for continuing the partnership over the next three years.

"It is through such partnerships that we are able to turn dreams into reality. With our land delivery programme, we assist local authorities in servicing residential land that is affordable to lower-income earners.

“By providing access to a plot with a title deed, these individuals can build their own homes on land that is legally theirs,” she said.
