NGA-I makes comeback with hard-hitting upcoming single 'Thorota'

Namibian musician and hip-hop artist NGA-I is set to make a comeback with his new single, 'Thorota', his first major release since 3 March 2025.

The track signals a confident return and a bold artistic statement from an artist who says growth, self-belief and craft are at the heart of his latest work.

In an interview with Tjil, NGA-I spoke about his inspiration: “It was really inspiration itself. I draw from the music and the instrumental. The secret for me is taking it easy. I listen to what the beat is saying and put it into words."

He describes the track as a personal reflection of his artistic evolution, rooted in his beginnings as a poet and emcee.

While hip-hop and trap often emphasise competition, he says his mindset has changed over time.

“I came up as an emcee and a poet. With hip-hop and trap it's all about competition, but for me I chose to be a creator, so with time I focused less on competition and competing with other rappers and chose to do my own thing. But this song was one to show that if it comes down to the craft and having to compete, I can outrap and outflow most, if not all, of the rappers in the game”, he said.

Taking a stand

The song reflects his current mental state and competitive energy.

"'Thorota' represents my current state of mind of being the best hip-hop artist in the Namibian industry," he said.

"I am claiming my position as the paramount chief of hip-hop, and I want my listeners to feel that strength and confidence when going out into the world.”

He added that listeners should be proud and bold, encouraging them to celebrate their craft, show their courage like lions, and carry themselves with confidence, both as individuals and as Namibians.

NGA-I explained that the technical focus of the track is on vernacular rap and flow, admitting that he previously downplayed his talent.

"Now when people say I'm the best, my response is, 'Yeah, you have great taste in music.'"

More to come

NGA-I highlighted a few lyrics he is particularly proud of, including a line inspired by personal experience.

“In the second verse I say to a girl that I love her swag (outfit), noting how she wears clothes from Mr Price but with a Louis Vuitton bag. That’s just so cool because I want our people and our youth to be proud of who they are."

He believes the track will resonate strongly with loyal supporters and local hip-hop fans.

“'Thorota' will definitely be a great one for my die-hard fans who find themselves in debates about who is the best, and this is a song Namibian hip-hop supporters can use to defend our vernacular trap music against international trap when compared."

Looking ahead, he says more releases are already planned, including the release of the 'Thorota' music video, followed by more videos and the eventual release of the Nga-I The Kid mixtape.

He added that his long-term mission remains unchanged: “All in all, the vision hasn't changed: put Namibian hip-hop out there.”
