JUST IN: Namibian opera makes European debut
In a historic moment of cultural exchange, Namibia's first opera, 'Chief Hijangua' by Eslon Hindundu, is set to grace European stages for the first time.
The opera, which explores the complex shared history between Namibia and Germany during the colonial era, will be performed at the Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin from 15 to 17 September.
The cast will be dressed by Namibian award-winning fashion designer Sirenga.
'Chief Hijangua' made its world premiere in 2022 at the National Theatre of Namibia, marking a significant Namibian-German collaborative effort.
This unique production, sung in both Otjiherero and German, seeks to foster a multilingual and intercultural dialogue.
“The opera tells the compelling story of Chief Hijangua, a central figure in Namibia's history, and his experiences during the colonial period. It serves as a poignant reminder of the historical ties between Namibia and Germany, emphasising the importance of understanding and reconciliation,” a press statement read.
In collaboration with the Humboldt Forum, a special children's version of 'Chief Hijangua' will be performed as a school and family concert over three days, catering to young audiences aged six to 12. This adaptation promises to be an educational and culturally enriching experience for children and families alike.
